Une machine-outil est une machine pour la mise en forme ou l'usinage de métal ou d'autres matériaux rigides, généralement par découpe, perçage, meulage, cisaillement ou autres formes de déformation. Les machines-outils utilisent une sorte d'outil qui coupe ou façonne. Toutes les machines-outils ont un moyen de contraindre la pièce et de fournir un mouvement guidé des parties de la machine. Ainsi, le mouvement relatif entre la pièce et l'outil de coupe est contrôlé ou contraint par la machine au moins dans une certaine mesure, plutôt que d'être entièrement "improvisé" ou "à main levée". La définition précise du terme machine-outil varie selon les utilisateurs, comme indiqué ci-dessous. Alors que toutes les machines-outils sont des «machines qui aident les gens à faire des choses», même si toutes les machines d'usine ne sont pas des machines-outils.
