Macroévolution
Macroevolution est l'évolution sur une échelle de pools de gènes séparés. Les études macroévolutionnaires mettent l'accent sur le changement qui se produit au niveau ou au-dessus du niveau des espèces, contrairement à la microévolution, qui se réfère à de plus petits changements d'évolution au sein d'une espèce ou d'une population. Contrairement aux revendications des créationnistes, la macro et la microévolution décrivent des processus fondamentalement identiques sur différentes échelles de temps. Le processus de spéciation peut également relever de l'une ou l'autre, selon les forces pensées pour la conduire. La paléontologie, la biologie du développement évolutif, la génomique comparative et la phylostratigraphie génomique fournissent la plupart des preuves des modèles et des processus qui peuvent être classés comme macroévolution. Un exemple de macroevolution est l'apparition de plumes lors de l'évolution des oiseaux à partir de dinosaures theropod. Le parcours évolutif des équidés est souvent considéré comme un exemple typique de la macroévolution. Le premier genre connu, Hyracotherium, était un animal herbivore ressemblant à un chien qui vivait au début du Cénozoïque. Comme son habitat transformé en une prairie ouverte et aride, une pression sélective exige que l'animal devienne un grazer rapide.
