Les mésosomes sont des invaginations pliées dans la membrane plasmatique des bactéries qui sont produites par les techniques de fixation chimique utilisées pour préparer des échantillons pour microscopie électronique. Bien que plusieurs fonctions aient été proposées pour ces structures dans les années 1960, elles ont été reconnues comme des artefacts à la fin des années 1970 et ne sont plus considérées comme faisant partie de la structure normale des cellules bactériennes.
