Microbiome
Un microbiome est «la communauté écologique des microorganismes commensaux, symbiotiques et pathogènes qui partagent littéralement notre espace corporel». Ce terme a été initialement inventé par Joshua Lederberg, qui a soutenu l'importance des microorganismes qui habitent le corps humain dans la santé et la maladie. De nombreux articles scientifiques distinguent «microbiome» et «microbiota» pour décrire soit les génomes collectifs des microorganismes qui résident respectivement dans un créneau environnemental ou les microorganismes eux-mêmes. Cependant, selon les définitions originales, ces termes sont en grande partie synonymes. Le corps humain contient plus de 10 fois plus de cellules microbiennes que les cellules humaines, bien que tout le microbiome pèse environ 200 grammes, avec des estimations de poids allant jusqu'à 3 livres. Certains considèrent qu'il s'agit d'un «organe nouvellement découvert», car son existence n'était généralement pas reconnue jusqu'à la fin des années 1990 et on comprend qu'il peut avoir un impact accablant sur la santé humaine. Les techniques modernes de séquençage de l'ADN ont permis aux chercheurs de trouver la majorité de ces microbes, car la plupart d'entre eux ne peuvent pas être cultivés dans un laboratoire en utilisant les techniques actuelles.
