En ce sens, le multiculturalisme est une société «à l'aise avec la riche tapisserie de la vie humaine et le désir des gens d'exprimer leur propre identité de la manière qui leur paraissent appropriée». Les idéologies ou les politiques multiculturelles varient considérablement, allant du plaidoyer du respect égal Aux différentes cultures d'une société, à une politique de promotion du maintien de la diversité culturelle, aux politiques dans lesquelles les personnes de divers groupes ethniques et religieux sont abordés par les autorités telles qu'elles sont définies par le groupe auquel elles appartiennent. Deux stratégies différentes et apparemment incohérentes se sont développées au moyen de différentes politiques et stratégies gouvernementales. La première concerne l'interaction et la communication entre différentes cultures.

As a descriptive term, multiculturalism is the simple fact of cultural diversity and the demographic make-up of a specific place, sometimes at the organizational level, e.g., schools, businesses, neighborhoods, cities, or nations. As a prescriptive term, multiculturalism encourages ideologies and policies that promote this diversity or its institutionalization. In this sense, multiculturalism is a society “at ease with the rich tapestry of human life and the desire amongst people to express their own identity in the manner they see fit.” Multicultural ideologies or policies vary widely, ranging from the advocacy of equal respect to the various cultures in a society, to a policy of promoting the maintenance of cultural diversity, to policies in which people of various ethnic and religious groups are addressed by the authorities as defined by the group they belong to. Two main different and seemingly inconsistent strategies have developed through different government policies and strategies. The first focuses on interaction and communication between different cultures.
