Noctuidae
Les papillons Noctuidae ou Owlet sont une famille de papillons robustes qui comprennent plus de 35 000 espèces connues sur un éventuel total de 100 000, dans plus de 4 200 genres. Ils constituent la plus grande famille des Lépidoptères. Leur distribution est mondiale, avec environ 1 450 espèces trouvées en Europe. La plupart ont des extrémités ternes, même si certaines ont des colbrés aux couleurs vives. Les différences entre les sexes sont généralement peu nombreuses. L'écrasante majorité des noctuids volent la nuit et sont presque invariablement attirés par la lumière. Beaucoup sont également attirés par les fleurs sucrées et riches en nectar. Une partie de la famille est emportée par des chauves-souris. Cependant, de nombreuses espèces de Noctuidae ont des organes minuscules dans leurs oreilles qui répondent aux appels d'échappée de chauve-souris, en envoyant leurs muscles d'aile dans un spasme et en faisant tourner les mites de façon irrégulière. Cela aide les papillotes à échapper aux chauves-souris. Plusieurs espèces ont des larves qui vivent dans le sol et sont des ravageurs agricoles ou horticoles. Ce sont les «vers cutanés» qui mangent les bases de jeunes brassicas et de laitues. Ils forment des pupes dures et brillantes. La plupart des larves nocturnes se nourrissent pendant la nuit, se reposent dans le sol ou dans une crevasse dans leur usine alimentaire au cours de la journée.
