L'one-upmanship est l'art ou la pratique consistant à surpasser successivement un concurrent. Exactement lorsque le terme est originaire est inconnu; Plusieurs exemples sont connus depuis le début des années 1900. Il a été utilisé dans le titre d'un livre de Stephen Potter, publié en 1952 dans le prolongement de The Theory and Practice of Gamesmanship, qui contenait également le terme, et les titres de Lifemanship dans sa série d'auto-assistance à la langue maternelle Les livres et les dérivés du film et de la télévision, qui enseignent diverses stratagèmes pour y parvenir. Cette satire de guides de style auto-assistance manipule les conventions britanniques traditionnelles étouffantes traditionnelles pour les joueurs, toute la vie étant un jeu, qui comprend que si vous n'êtes pas unique, vous êtes un seul coup.
