P-n jonction
Une jonction p-n est une limite ou une interface entre deux types de matériau semi-conducteur, type p et n-type, à l'intérieur d'un seul cristal de semi-conducteur. Il est créé par dopage, par exemple par implantation ionique, diffusion de dopants ou par épitaxie. Si on utilisait deux pièces séparées, cela introduirait une limite de grain entre les semi-conducteurs qui entraverait sévèrement son utilité en diffusant les électrons et les trous. Les jonctions p-n sont des «blocs de construction» élémentaires de la plupart des appareils électroniques semi-conducteurs tels que des diodes, des transistors, des cellules solaires, des LED et des circuits intégrés; Ce sont les sites actifs où se déroule l'action électronique de l'appareil. Par exemple, un type commun de transistor, le transistor de jonction bipolaire, se compose de deux jonctions p-n en série, sous la forme n-p-n ou p-n-p. La découverte de la jonction p-n est généralement attribuée au physicien américain Russell Ohl de Bell Laboratories. Une jonction Schottky est un cas particulier d'une jonction p-n, où le métal sert au rôle de semi-conducteur de type p.
