Le panicum est un grand genre d'environ 450 espèces d'herbes indigènes dans toutes les régions tropicales du monde, avec quelques espèces s'étendant dans la zone tempérée nord. Ils sont souvent des graminées grandes, annuelles ou vivaces, atteignant 1 à 3 m de hauteur. Les fleurs sont produites dans une panicule bien développée souvent jusqu'à 60 cm de longueur avec de nombreuses graines, de 1 à 6 mm de long et 1-2 mm de large. Les fruits sont développés à partir d'une spikelet à deux branches. Seul le flot supérieur de chaque spikelet est fertile; Le flot inférieur est stérile ou stable. Les deux glumes sont présentes et bien développées. L'Australie compte 29 espèces indigènes et 9 espèces introduites de Panicum. Les espèces de Panicum bien connues comprennent le millet proso et l'érable.
