La patrilinéité est un système dans lequel un individu appartient à la lignée de son père. Cela implique généralement l'héritage de la propriété, des noms ou des titres par la ligne masculine. Son patriline est son père et son père et son père ... et ainsi de suite. Les formes adjectives sont patrilinéaires, agnatiques et masculines. Le patriline de l'un est donc un registre de la descendance d'un ancêtre à un descendant dans lequel les individus dans toutes les générations intermédiaires sont des hommes. Dans l'anthropologie culturelle, un patrilinéage est un groupe de parenté consanguiné et mâle, dont chacun des membres est descendu de l'ancêtre commun à travers les ancêtres masculins. Le nom de famille d'une personne et l'ADN-ADN génétique d'un homme ont descendu la même ligne de père en fils. Dans un système de descendance patrilinéaire, un individu est considéré comme appartenant au même groupe de descendance que son père à partir duquel le nom de famille des membres est couramment dérivé, bien que la matrilinéité ait également été utilisée comme groupe de descendance dans certaines cultures. Un agnate est son parent génétique, masculin ou féminin, exclusivement par l'intermédiaire d'ancêtres masculins.
