En économie, la courbe de Phillips est une relation historique inverse entre les taux de chômage et les taux d'inflation correspondants qui se traduisent par une économie. Dit simplement, la diminution du chômage, dans une économie sera en corrélation avec des taux d'inflation plus élevés. Bien qu'il existe un compromis à court terme entre le chômage et l'inflation, il n'a pas été observé à long terme. En 1968, Milton Friedman a affirmé que la courbe de Phillips n'était applicable qu'à court terme et que, à long terme, les politiques inflationnistes ne diminueraient pas le chômage. Friedman a correctement prédit que, dans les années à venir après 1968, l'inflation et le chômage augmenteraient. La courbe Phillips à long terme est maintenant considérée comme une ligne verticale au taux de chômage naturel, où le taux d'inflation n'a aucun effet sur le chômage. En conséquence, la courbe de Phillips est maintenant considérée comme trop simpliste, le taux de chômage étant supplanté par des prédicteurs plus précis de l'inflation en fonction de la vitesse des mesures de l'offre monétaire, comme la vitesse du MZM, qui est affectée par le chômage à court et à long terme.
