Piciformes
Neuf familles d'oiseaux largement arborescents constituent l'ordre des Piciformes, dont les plus connus sont les Picidés, qui comprennent les pics et les proches. Les Piciformes contiennent environ 67 genres vivants avec un peu plus de 400 espèces, dont les Picidés représentent environ la moitié. En général, les Piciformes sont insectivores, bien que les barbets et les toucans mangent surtout des fruits et les guides de miel soient uniques chez les oiseaux pour pouvoir digérer la cire d'abeille. Presque tous les Piciformes ont des pieds de zygodactyle semblables à des perroquets, deux orteils en avant et deux en arrière, un arrangement qui présente des avantages évidents pour les oiseaux qui passent une grande partie de leur temps sur les troncs d'arbres. Une exception sont quelques espèces de pics à trois doigts. Les jacamars à l'écart, les Piciformes n'ont pas de plumes à tout âge, seules de vraies plumes. Ils varient en taille à partir de la Picoulet Rufous à 8 centimètres de longueur et pesant 7 grammes, au Toco Toucan, à 63 centimètres de long, et pesant 680 grammes. Tous nichent dans les cavités et ont des jeunes altruistes.
