Moelle
Pith, ou medulla, est un tissu dans les tiges des plantes vasculaires. Pith est composé de cellules de parenchyme souples et spongieux, qui stockent et transportent des éléments nutritifs dans l'ensemble de la plante. Dans les eudicots, la moelle est située au centre de la tige. En monocoque, elle s'étend aussi dans les tiges et les racines à fleurs. La moelle est encerclée par un anneau de xylème; Le xylème, à son tour, est encerclé par un anneau de phloème. Alors que la nouvelle croissance de la moelle est habituellement de couleur blanche ou pâle, au fur et à mesure que le tissu vieillit normalement s'obscurcit jusqu'à une couleur brun plus profonde. Dans les arbres, la moelle est généralement présente dans une croissance jeune, mais dans le tronc et les branches plus anciennes, le pith est souvent remplacé - en grande partie - par le xylème. Dans certaines plantes, la moelle au milieu de la tige peut se dessécher et se désintégrer, ce qui entraîne une tige creuse. Quelques plantes, telles que les noix, possèdent une moelle distincte avec plusieurs petites cavités. Les cellules dans les parties périphériques de la moelle peuvent, dans certaines plantes, se développer pour être différentes des cellules dans le reste de la moelle. Cette couche de cellules est alors appelée la région périmédullaire du pithamus. Un exemple de ceci peut être observé dans Hedera helix, une espèce de lierre.
