Pape Pie XII
Le pape Pie XII, né Eugénio Maria Giuseppe Giovanni Pacelli, a régné du 2 mars 1939 à sa mort en 1958. Avant son élection à la papauté, Pacelli a été secrétaire du Département des affaires ecclésiastiques extraordinaires, du nonce papal en Allemagne et du Cardinal Secrétaire de État, dans quelle capacité il a travaillé pour conclure des traités avec des nations européennes et latino-américaines, notamment le Reichskonkordat avec l'Allemagne nazie, avec lequel la plupart des historiens croient que le Vatican a cherché à protéger l'Église en Allemagne tandis que Adolf Hitler a cherché la destruction du «catholicisme politique" .
