Polycrates
Polycrates, fils d'Aeaces, était le tyran de Samos du c. 538 av. J.-C. à 522 av. J.-C. Il a pris le pouvoir lors d'une fête de Hera avec ses frères Pantagnotus et Syloson, mais bientôt Pantagnotus a tué et exilé Syloson pour prendre son plein contrôle. Il a ensuite allié avec Amasis II, pharaon d'Egypte, ainsi que le tyran de Naxos Lygdamis. Avec une marine de 100 penteconters et une armée de 1000 archers, il a pillé les îles de la mer Égée et les villes de la côte ionienne de l'Asie Mineure, vaincre et asservir les marines de Lesbos et de Milet. Il a également conquis la petite île de Rhénée, qu'il a enchaîné à proximité de Delos comme une dédicace pour Apollon. Il avait une réputation à la fois un guerrier féroce et un tyran éclairé. Sur Samos, il a construit un aqueduc, un grand temple d'Héra et un palais reconstruit plus tard par l'empereur romain Caligula. En 522 av. J.-C., il a célébré une double fête inhabituelle en l'honneur du dieu Apollo de Delos et de Delphes; Il a été suggéré que l'Hymne homérique à Apollon, parfois attribué à Cynéethus de Chios, était composé pour cette occasion. Polycrates était probablement un patron des poètes Anacreon, et Ibycus et du docteur crotonien Democedes.
