Port Harcourt
Port Harcourt est la capitale de Rivers State, au Nigeria. Il se trouve le long de la rivière Bonny et se trouve dans le delta du Niger. Selon le recensement nigérian de 2006, Port Harcourt a une population de 1 382 592. Le port a été construit en 1912, mais n'a pas donné son nom jusqu'en août 1913, lorsque le gouverneur du Nigéria, Sir Frederick Lugard, l'a nommé «Port Harcourt» en l'honneur de Lewis Vernon Harcourt, alors secrétaire d'État aux colonies. La région qui est devenue Port Harcourt en 1912 était avant cette partie des terres agricoles du groupe du village de Diobu, le groupe Ikwerre, un sous-groupe Igbo. L'administration coloniale du Nigéria a créé le port pour exporter le charbon des charbonnages d'Enugu, situé à 151 milles au nord de Port Harcourt, auquel il était lié par un chemin de fer appelé Eastern Line, également construit par les Britanniques. En 1956, le pétrole brut a été découvert en quantités commerciales à Oloibiri et l'économie de Port Harcourt s'est tournée vers le pétrole lorsque le premier chargement de pétrole brut nigérian a été exporté par la ville en 1958. Grâce aux avantages de l'industrie pétrolière nigériane, Port Harcourt a été développé, Avec des aspects de la modernisation tels que les passages supérieurs et les quartiers urbains.
