Dementia pugilistica
Dementia pugilistica est une maladie neurodégénérative présentant des caractéristiques de démence pouvant affecter les boxeurs amateurs ou professionnels, les lutteurs ainsi que les athlètes d'autres sports souffrant de commotions cérébrales. Une variante de l'encéphalopathie traumatique chronique est également appelée encéphalopathie chronique du boxer, encéphalopathie du boxer traumatique, démence du boxeur, lésion cérébrale chronique traumatique associée à la boxe et syndrome du punch-drunk. Les symptômes et les signes de DP se développent progressivement sur une longue période latente, parfois d'une dizaine d'années, le temps moyen d'apparition étant d'environ 12 à 16 ans après le début d'une carrière dans la boxe. On pense que la condition affecte environ 15% à 20% des boxeurs professionnels. Les commotions répétitives sont également fréquentes pour les quarterbacks, les récepteurs larges, les joueurs de hockey et de soccer et les hommes de défense du hockey. De temps en temps, une épreuve de culpabilité contre le foyer aura une commotion cérébrale. La condition est causée par des coups répétés de concussion et de sous-concussion, ou les deux. En raison de la crainte que la boxe puisse causer une DP, il y a un mouvement parmi les professionnels de la santé pour interdire le sport.
