Les Pyraloidea sont une superfamille de mite contenant environ 16 000 espèces décrites dans le monde entier, et probablement au moins autant d'autres restent à décrire. Ils sont en général assez petits mites. Cette superfamille utilisée pour contenir les Hyblaeidae, Thyrididae, Alucitidae, Pterophoridae et Pyralidae. À l'heure actuelle, les Crambidae sont généralement séparés des Pyralidae, mais les quatre premières familles sont désormais séparées comme une superfamille distincte. Certains genres défendent toujours une classification facile et ont été affectés de diverses manières aux Crambidae ou Pyralidae. Les larves de la plupart des espèces se nourrissent de plantes vivantes, en interne ou à l'extérieur, comme des rouleaux de feuilles, des feuilleteurs de feuilles, des foreurs, des broyeurs de racines et des broyeurs de graines. Certaines espèces vivent par hasard dans des nids de fourmis, sont antérieures à des insectes à l'échelle ou vivent dans les nids d'abeilles. Les larves des Acentropinae sont adaptées à la vie sous l'eau, et certaines Phycitinae et Pyralinae sont adaptées à des environnements très secs et leurs larves se nourrissent de produits alimentaires stockés. D'autres se nourrissent de détritus animaux tels que les carrions et les excréments.
