En physique théorique, la théorie des champs quantiques est un cadre théorique pour la construction de modèles mécaniques quantiques de particules subatomiques dans la physique des particules et les quasi-particules dans la physique de la matière condensée. Un QFT traite les particules comme des états excités d'un champ physique sous-jacent, donc ce sont appelés quanta de champ. Par exemple, l'électrodynamique quantique a un champ d'électrons et un champ de photon; La chromodynamique quantique a un champ pour chaque type de quark; Et, en matière condensée, il existe un champ de déplacement atomique qui donne lieu à des particules de phonon. Edward Witten décrit QFT comme «de loin» la théorie la plus difficile de la physique moderne.
