Radiodensité
La radiodensité se réfère à l'incapacité relative des rayonnements électromagnétiques, en particulier des rayons X, à traverser un matériau particulier. La radioluccience indique une plus grande transparence ou "transradiancy" aux photons à rayons X. Les matériaux qui inhibent le passage du rayonnement électromagnétique sont appelés radiodense, tandis que ceux qui permettent de passer plus librement les radiations sont appelés radiolucent. Le terme se réfère à l'aspect blanc relativement opaque de matériaux ou de substances denses sur des études d'imagerie radiographique, par rapport à l'aspect relativement plus sombre de matériaux moins denses. Les rayons X font partie du spectre électromagnétique, avec des énergies de photons supérieures à celles de la lumière visible. Les rayons X se distinguent des rayons gamma en ce qu'ils sont produits non pas par des transitions dans le noyau atomique, mais aussi par décélération d'une particule chargée ou par transition d'état des électrons orbitaux. Les radiographies diagnostiques sont produites à l'aide de tubes à rayons X. La partie ondes radio du spectre électromagnétique représente des photons beaucoup plus faibles en énergie / fréquence que la lumière visible.
