Le ribosome est une machine moléculaire grande et complexe, qui se trouve dans toutes les cellules vivantes, qui sert de site principal de synthèse biologique des protéines. Les ribosomes relient les acides aminés ensemble dans l'ordre spécifié par les molécules d'ARN messenger. Les ribosomes se composent de deux composants principaux: la petite sous-unité ribosomale qui lit l'ARN et la grande sous-unité qui rejoint les acides aminés pour former une chaîne polypeptidique. Chaque sous-unité est composée d'une ou plusieurs molécules d'ARN ribosomique et d'une variété de protéines. Les ribosomes et les molécules associées sont également connus sous le nom d'appareil de traduction. La séquence d'ADN codant pour une protéine peut être copiée plusieurs fois dans des chaînes d'ARN messager d'une séquence similaire. Les ribosomes peuvent se lier à une chaîne d'ARNm et l'utiliser comme matrice pour déterminer la séquence correcte d'acides aminés dans une protéine particulière. Les acides aminés sont sélectionnés, collectés et transportés sur le ribosome par transfert d'ARN, qui pénètrent dans une partie du ribosome et se lient à la chaîne d'ARN messager. Les acides aminés attachés sont ensuite liés entre eux par une autre partie du ribosome.
