Un terme académique ou «terme» est une partie d'une année universitaire, le temps pendant lequel un établissement d'enseignement détient des cours. Les horaires adoptés varient considérablement. ▪ Un système de semestre divise l'année académique en deux termes, qui sont habituellement de 14 à 20 semaines chacun. ▪ Un système trimestriel divise l'année scolaire en trois termes qui peuvent être aussi courts que huit semaines ou jusqu'à 16 semaines chacune. ▪ Un système quadrimestre divise l'année académique en quatre termes, jusqu'à 12 semaines chacun, et compte généralement l'été comme un des termes. ▪ Un système de quinzième siècle divise l'année académique en cinq termes, qui servaient à une éducation plus ouverte et à un apprentissage flexible. Dans la plupart des pays, l'année académique commence à la fin de l'été ou au début de l'automne et se termine au printemps ou à l'été suivant. Dans les pays de l'hémisphère Nord, cela signifie que l'année scolaire dure d'août, de septembre ou d'octobre à mai, de juin ou de juillet. Dans les pays de l'hémisphère sud, l'année scolaire s'harmonise avec l'année civile, de février ou de mars à novembre ou de décembre. L'été peut ou non faire partie du terme système.
