Un semi-groupe généralise un monoïde en ce sens qu'un demi-groupe n'a pas besoin d'un élément d'identité. Il a également généralisé un groupe dans lequel aucun élément n'a eu d'inverse, donc le nom du semi-groupe. L'opération binaire d'un semi-groupe est souvent désignée de manière multiplicative: ou simplement, indique le résultat de l'application de l'opération semi-grille sur la paire ordonnée. L'opération doit être associative de sorte que pour tout x, y et z, mais ne doit pas être commutative de sorte qu'il ne soit pas égal. Par définition, un semi-groupe est un magma associatif. Un demi-groupe avec un élément d'identité s'appelle un monoïde. Un groupe est alors un monoid dans lequel chaque élément a un élément inverse. Les semigroups ne doivent pas être confondus avec des quasigroups qui sont des ensembles avec une opération binaire non nécessairement associative telle que la division soit toujours possible. L'étude formelle des semigroups a commencé au début du 20ème siècle.

The operation is required to be associative so that for all x, y and z, but need not be commutative so that does not have to equal . By definition, a semigroup is an associative magma. A semigroup with an identity element is called a monoid. A group is then a monoid in which every element has an inverse element. Semigroups must not be confused with quasigroups which are sets with a not necessarily associative binary operation such that division is always possible. The formal study of semigroups began in the early 20th century.
