Serotype
Le serotype ou le sérovar se réfère à des variations distinctes au sein d'une espèce de bactéries ou de virus ou parmi des cellules immunitaires de différents individus. Ces microorganismes, ces virus ou ces cellules sont classés en fonction de leurs antigènes de surface cellulaire, permettant la classification épidémiologique des organismes au niveau des sous-espèces. Un groupe de sérovars avec des antigènes communs s'appelle sérogroupe. Le sérotypage joue souvent un rôle essentiel dans la détermination des espèces et des sous-espèces. Le genre de bactéries de Salmonella, par exemple, a été déterminé à avoir plus de 4400 sérotypes, dont Salmonella enterica sérovar Typhimurium, S. enterica serovar Typhi et S. enterica serovar Dublin. Vibrio cholerae, l'espèce de bactéries qui cause le choléra, possède plus de 200 sérotypes, basés sur des antigènes cellulaires. Seulement deux d'entre eux ont été observés pour produire l'entérotoxine puissante qui aboutit au choléra: 0: 1 et 0: 139. Les sérotypes ont été découverts par la microbiologiste américaine Rebecca Lancefield en 1933.
