L'économie des services peut se référer à l'un ou l'autre des deux développements économiques récents: ▪ L'importance accrue du secteur des services dans les économies industrialisées. La liste actuelle des sociétés Fortune 500 contient plus de sociétés de services et moins de fabricants que les décennies précédentes. ▪ L'importance relative du service dans une offre de produit. L'économie des services dans les pays en développement est principalement concentrée dans les services financiers, l'hôtellerie, la vente au détail, la santé, les services humains, les technologies de l'information et l'éducation. Les produits d'aujourd'hui ont une composante de service plus élevée que dans les décennies précédentes. Dans la documentation de gestion, on parle de la servitization de produits. Pratiquement tous les produits ont aujourd'hui un composant de service. L'ancienne dichotomie entre produit et service a été remplacée par un continuum service-produit. De nombreux produits sont transformés en services. Par exemple, IBM considère ses activités comme une entreprise de services. Même si elle fabrique toujours des ordinateurs, elle considère les biens physiques comme une petite partie de l'industrie des «solutions d'affaires». Ils ont constaté que l'élasticité-prix de la demande pour «solutions d'affaires» est beaucoup moins importante que pour le matériel.
