Simurgh
Simurgh, simorgh, simurg, simoorg ou simourv, est une créature aérienne mythique et bienveillante. Il est parfois assimilé à d'autres oiseaux mythologiques tels qu'Arab Anqā ou Homa persan. On trouve cette figure dans toutes les époques de l'art et de la littérature de la Grande Iran et est également visible dans l'iconographie de l'Arménie médiévale, de l'empire byzantin et d'autres régions qui se situaient dans la sphère de l'influence culturelle perse. L'oiseau mythique se trouve également dans la mythologie des Turcs de l'Asie centrale et s'appelle Kerkés, Semrug, Semurg, Samran et Samruk. Le nom de simurgh dérive de Pahlavi Sēnmurw Persan moyen, également attesté dans Pāzand Persan moyen comme sīna-mrū. Le terme Persan moyen dérive à son tour d'Avestan mərəγō Saēnō "l'oiseau Saēna", à l'origine un rapace, probablement un aigle, un faucon ou un sparrowhawk, comme on peut le déduire du nomat étymologique Sanskrit śyenaḥ qui apparaît également comme une figure divine. Saēna est également un nom personnel, qui est la racine du nom.
