Snail mail ou smail - après l'escargot à vitesse lente - se réfère à des lettres et des missives portées par des services de livraison de courrier classiques. Aussi nommé d'après le "escargot" utilisé pour coller l'enveloppe. La phrase se réfère au décalage entre l'envoi d'une lettre et sa réception, par rapport à l'expédition et à l'envoi quasi instantané de son équivalent électronique, par courrier électronique. Il est également connu, plus neutre, comme le courrier, le courrier postal, le courrier terrestre, ou tout simplement le courrier et le poste. Un terme antérieur du même type est le courrier de surface, inventé rétrospectivement après le développement de la poste aérienne. Cela s'est passé entre les années 1970 et 1990. Les correspondants de courrier d'escargot sont les correspondants qui communiquent entre eux par l'intermédiaire du système postal, plutôt que sur Internet, qui est devenu le moyen le plus courant. Certains groupes en ligne utilisent également du courrier papier par le biais de cadeaux réguliers ou d'articles d'actualité. Dans certains pays, les services sont disponibles pour imprimer et livrer des courriels à ceux qui ne peuvent recevoir de courrier électronique, comme les personnes sans ordinateur ni accès à Internet. Une terminologie similaire a été utilisée dans les années 1840 pour contraster le courrier postal déjà opérationnel avec le nouveau télégraphe.
