Sonomètre
Un sonomètre est un appareil constitué d'une boîte creuse ayant deux trous. Une chaîne est attachée à celle-ci par laquelle les vibrations transversales des cordes peuvent être étudiées. On l'appelle également le monochord car il ne comporte qu'une seule chaîne. Sur la boîte rectangulaire en bois se trouvent deux ponts fixes, près des extrémités, et à une extrémité est une poulie. Une chaîne, un fil est fixé à une extrémité, coule sur les ponts et la poulie, et attaché à un porte-poids accroché sous la poulie. Des poids peuvent être ajoutés au support pour produire une tension dans le fil, et un troisième pont mobile peut être placé sous celui-ci pour changer la longueur de la section vibrante de la chaîne. Il est couramment utilisé dans l'expérience de Melde. Un sonomètre démontre la relation entre la fréquence du son produite par un cordon déchiqueté et la tension, la longueur et la masse par unité de longueur de la chaîne. Ces relations sont généralement appelées les lois de Mersenne après Marin Mersenne, qui les a étudiées et codifiées.
