Plecoptera
Les Plecoptera sont un ordre d'insectes, communément appelés des philatélies. Quelque 3 500 espèces sont décrites dans le monde entier, de nouvelles espèces étant encore découvertes. Les mouches en pierre se trouvent dans le monde entier, sauf l'Antarctique. On pense que Stoneflies est l'un des groupes les plus primitifs de Neoptera, avec des proches parents identifiés à partir des périodes géologiques du Carbonifère et du Permien inférieur, alors que les vraies pierres sont connues des fossiles un peu plus jeunes. La diversité moderne, cependant, est apparemment d'origine mésozoïque. Les plecoptères se trouvent à la fois dans les hémisphères du Sud et du Nord, et les populations sont assez distinctes, bien que les preuves évolutives suggèrent que les espèces peuvent avoir traversé l'équateur à plusieurs reprises avant de devenir isolées géographiquement. Toutes les espèces de Plecoptera sont intolérantes à la pollution de l'eau, et leur présence dans un ruisseau ou l'eau chaude est habituellement un indicateur de bonne ou excellente qualité de l'eau.
