Le Nil divise le pays en moitiés de l'est et de l'ouest. Sa religion prédominante est l'islam. Le Soudan abritait de nombreuses civilisations anciennes. Les royaumes tels que; Royaume de Kush, Kerma, Nobatia, Alodia, Makuria, Meroë et d'autres ont prospéré au Soudan le long du Nil. Au cours de la période prédynastique, Nubia et Nagadan Upper Egypt étaient identiques, évoluaient simultanément des systèmes de royauté pharaonique d'ici à 3300 av. J.-C. En raison de sa proximité avec l'Egypte, le Soudan a participé à l'histoire plus large du Proche-Orient dans la mesure où elle a été christianisée au 6ème siècle et islamisée au 7ème. À la suite de la christianisation, la langue du vieux Nubien est la langue nilo-saharienne enregistrée la plus ancienne. Au cours de l'Antiquité classique, aujourd'hui, le Soudan était connu comme l'Ethiopie.

Sudan, officially the Republic of the Sudan, is an Arab republic in the Nile Valley of North Africa, bordered by Egypt to the north, the Red Sea, Eritrea and Ethiopia to the east, South Sudan to the south, the Central African Republic to the southwest, Chad to the west and Libya to the northwest. The Nile River divides the country into eastern and western halves. Its predominant religion is Islam. Sudan was home to numerous ancient civilizations. Kingdoms such as; Kingdom of Kush, Kerma, Nobatia, Alodia, Makuria, Meroë and others flourished in Sudan along the Nile River. During the predynastic period Nubia and Nagadan Upper Egypt were identical, simultaneously evolved systems of pharaonic kingship by 3300 BC. By virtue of its proximity to Egypt, the Sudan participated in the wider history of the Near East inasmuch as it was Christianized by the 6th century, and Islamized in the 7th. As a result of Christianization, the Old Nubian language stands as the oldest recorded Nilo-Saharan language. During Classical Antiquity, today Sudan was known as Ethiopia.
