Le surréalisme est un mouvement culturel qui a commencé au début des années 1920, et est surtout connu pour ses œuvres d'art visuelles et ses écrits. L'objectif était de "résoudre les conditions de rêve et de réalité précédemment contradictoires". Les artistes ont peint des scènes ennuyeuses et illogiques avec une précision photographique, créent des créatures étranges d'objets de tous les jours et développent des techniques de peinture qui permettent à l'inconscient de s'exprimer et / ou d'une idée / concept. Les œuvres surréalistes présentent l'élément de la surprise, des juxtapositions inattendues et non séquentielles; Cependant, de nombreux artistes et écrivains surréalistes considèrent avant tout leur travail comme une expression du mouvement philosophique, les œuvres étant un artefact. Le leader André Breton était explicite dans son assertion selon laquelle le surréalisme était avant tout un mouvement révolutionnaire. Le surréalisme s'est développé à partir des activités de Dada pendant la Première Guerre mondiale et le centre le plus important du mouvement était Paris. À partir des années 1920, le mouvement s'est répandu dans le monde entier, affectant éventuellement les arts visuels, la littérature, le cinéma et la musique de nombreux pays et langues, ainsi que la pensée et la pratique politiques, la philosophie et la théorie sociale.
