Dans un système d'alimentation électrique, un appareillage est la combinaison de disjoncteurs électriques, de fusibles ou de disjoncteurs utilisés pour contrôler, protéger et isoler les équipements électriques. Les appareillages de commutation sont utilisés à la fois pour désactiver l'équipement pour permettre le travail et pour effacer les défauts en aval. Ce type d'équipement est directement lié à la fiabilité de l'alimentation électrique. Les centrales centrales les plus anciennes ont utilisé des commutateurs simples à couteaux ouverts, montés sur des panneaux isolants de marbre ou d'amiante. Les niveaux de puissance et les tensions augmentent rapidement, rendant les interrupteurs à ouverture manuelle trop dangereux pour tout autre élément que l'isolement d'un circuit désexcité. Les équipements remplis d'huile ont permis de contenir et de contrôler en toute sécurité l'énergie de l'arc. Au début du 20ème siècle, une gamme d'appareillage serait une structure en métal avec des éléments de commutation actionnés électriquement, utilisant des disjoncteurs à huile. Aujourd'hui, l'équipement rempli d'huile a été en grande partie remplacé par des équipements de soufflage à l'air, sous vide ou SF6, ce qui permet de contrôler en toute sécurité les grands courants et les niveaux de puissance grâce à des équipements automatiques intégrant des commandes, des protections, des mesures et des communications numériques.
