Période orbitale
La période orbitale est le temps pris pour qu'un objet donné effectue une orbite complète autour d'un autre objet. Lorsqu'il est mentionné sans autre qualification en astronomie, il s'agit de la période sidérale d'un objet astronomique, qui est calculé par rapport aux étoiles. Il existe plusieurs types de périodes orbitales pour les objets autour du Soleil: ▪ La période sidérale est le cycle temporel où il faut un objet pour faire une orbite complète par rapport aux étoiles. C'est la période orbitale dans un cadre de référence inertiel. ▪ La période synodique est l'intervalle temporel qu'il faut pour qu'un objet réapparaisse au même point par rapport à deux ou plusieurs autres objets, par exemple Lorsque la Lune par rapport au Soleil observée de la Terre revient à la même phase d'illumination. La période synodique est le temps qui s'écoule entre deux conjonctions successives avec la ligne Sun-Earth dans le même ordre linéaire. La période synodique diffère de la période sidérale en raison de l'orbite terrestre autour du Soleil.
