Dans la génétique, une croix de test, introduite par Gregor Mendel, implique l'élevage d'un individu de caractère dominant avec un individu récessif, afin de déterminer la zygotie de l'ancien en analysant les proportions de progéniture avec le phénotype récessif. Le génotype dont une progéniture a pour chacun de ses gènes est déterminé par l'allèle hérité de ses parents. La combinaison des allèles résulte des chromosomes maternels et paternels apportés par chaque gamète lors de la fertilisation de cette progéniture. Au cours de la méiose chez les gamètes, les chromosomes homologues subissent une recombinaison génétique et se séparent de manière aléatoire dans des cellules filles haploïdes, chacun avec une combinaison unique de gènes codés maternellement et paternellement. Les croisements d'essai impliquent l'élevage de l'individu en question avec un autre individu qui exprime une version récessive du même trait. Si tous les descendants présentent le phénotype dominant, l'individu en question est dominante homozygote; Si la progéniture présente à la fois des phénotypes dominants et récessifs, l'individu est hétérozygote.
