Troisième ordre
En ce qui concerne les ordres religieux, un troisième ordre est une association de personnes qui vivent selon les idéaux et l'esprit d'un ordre religieux catholique, anglican ou luthérien, mais n'appartiennent pas à son «premier ordre» ou à son «second ordre» . Les membres des troisièmes ordres, connus sous le nom de tertiaires, sont généralement des laïcs, c'est-à-dire des hommes et des femmes qui ne prennent pas de vœux religieux, mais participent aux bonnes œuvres d'ordre et peuvent être autorisés à porter au moins certains éléments de l'habitude de l'ordre, scapulaire. Moins souvent, ils appartiennent à un institut religieux appelé «laïc du troisième ordre»). Le droit du canon catholique romain stipule: Les associations dont les membres partagent l'esprit d'un institut religieux pendant la vie laïque, mènent une vie apostolique et s'efforcent de perfectionnisme chrétien sous la direction supérieure du même institut sont appelés troisièmes ordres ou un autre nom approprié. Les anciens ordres monastiques avaient attaché à leurs abbayes des confréries de laïcs, remontant dans certains cas au 8ème siècle. Le Livre de Confrérie de Durham existe et embrasse quelque 20 000 noms au cours des huit siècles.
