Réflexion interne totale
La réflexion interne totale est un phénomène qui se produit lorsqu'une onde de propagation atteint une limite moyenne à un angle supérieur à un angle critique particulier par rapport à la normale à la surface. Si l'indice de réfraction est plus bas de l'autre côté de la limite et que l'angle d'incidence est supérieur à l'angle critique, l'onde ne peut pas traverser et est entièrement réfléchie. L'angle critique est l'angle d'incidence au-dessus duquel se produit la réflectance interne totale. Ceci est particulièrement courant en tant que phénomène optique, où des ondes lumineuses sont impliquées, mais il se produit avec de nombreux types d'ondes, comme les ondes électromagnétiques en général ou les ondes sonores. Lorsqu'une onde croise une frontière entre différents matériaux avec différents types d'indices de réfraction, l'onde sera partiellement réfractée à la surface de la limite et sera partiellement réfléchie. Toutefois, si l'angle d'incidence est supérieur à l'angle critique - l'angle d'incidence auquel la lumière est réfractée de telle sorte qu'elle se déplace le long de la limite - alors la vague ne franchira pas la limite et sera rétrospectivement refoulée intérieurement.
