Treehopper
Treehoppers et épines sont membres de la famille Membracidae, un groupe d'insectes liés aux cigales et aux cicadelles. On connaît environ 3 200 espèces d'arbres dans plus de 400 genres. Ils se trouvent sur tous les continents, à l'exception de l'Antarctique; Seules trois espèces sont connues d'Europe. Ils sont mieux connus pour leur pronotum agrandi et orné, qui ressemble le plus souvent aux épines, apparemment pour aider le camouflage. Dans certaines espèces, le pronotum se développe à une extension en forme de corne, mais des formes encore plus bizarres et difficiles à décrire sont également trouvées. Les insectes épineux, en raison de leur apparence inhabituelle, ont de longs naturalistes intéressés. Distinguer les hommes des femmes ne se réalise qu'en regardant les organes génitaux masculins. Les treehoppers individuels vivent habituellement pendant quelques mois. Le pronotum spécialisé peut ne pas être simplement une expansion de la sclérite prothoracique, mais une paire fusionnée d'appendices dorsaux du premier segment thoracique. Ils peuvent être des homologues en série d'ailes d'insectes, qui sont des appendices dorsaux du deuxième et / ou du troisième segment thoracique.
