Discordance
Une inconvénient est une surface enterrée d'érosion ou de non-dépôt qui sépare deux masses rocheuses ou des strates d'âges différents, indiquant que le dépôt de sédiments n'était pas continu. En général, la couche plus ancienne a été exposée à l'érosion pour un intervalle de temps avant le dépôt du plus jeune, mais le terme est utilisé pour décrire toute rupture dans l'enregistrement géologique sédimentaire. La signification de la discordance angulaire a été démontrée par James Hutton, qui a trouvé des exemples de Hutton's Unconformity à Jedburgh en 1787 et à Siccar Point en 1788. Les roches au-dessus d'une inconduite sont plus jeunes que les roches en dessous. Une inconduite représente le temps pendant lequel aucun sédiments n'a été conservé dans une région. Le record local pour cet intervalle de temps manque et les géologues doivent utiliser d'autres indices pour découvrir cette partie de l'histoire géologique de cette zone. L'intervalle de temps géologique non représenté est appelé un hiatus.
