Contrairement à une zone urbaine, une région métropolitaine comprend non seulement la zone urbaine, mais aussi les villes satellites plus les terres rurales intervenantes qui sont reliées socio-économiquement à la ville centrale urbaine, généralement par des liens d'emploi par trajet, la ville centrale étant la principale marché du travail.
