Le vanadium est un élément chimique avec le symbole V et le numéro atomique 23. C'est un métal de transition dur, gris argenté, ductile et malléable. L'élément ne se trouve que sous forme chimiquement combinée, mais une fois isolé artificiellement, la formation d'une couche d'oxyde stabilise le métal libre contre une oxydation supplémentaire. Andrés Manuel del Río a découvert des composés de vanadium en 1801 au Mexique en analysant un nouveau minéral contenant du plomb qu'il appelait «plomb brun», et présumait que ses qualités étaient dues à la présence d'un nouvel élément qu'il appelait erythronium car, lors du chauffage, La plupart de ses sels sont passés de leur couleur initiale au rouge. Quatre ans plus tard, il était convaincu par d'autres scientifiques que l'érythronium était identique au chrome. Les chlorures de vanadium ont été générés en 1830 par Nils Gabriel Sefström qui ont ainsi prouvé qu'un nouvel élément était impliqué, qu'il a appelé "vanadium" après la déesse scandinave de la beauté et de la fertilité, Vanadís. Les deux noms ont été attribués à la large gamme de couleurs trouvées dans les composés de vanadium. Le minerai au plomb de Del Rio a ensuite été renommé vanadinite pour sa teneur en vanadium.
