Wildcatter
Une version sauvage est un terme américain pour une personne qui forage des puits sauvages, qui sont des puits de pétrole d'exploration forés dans des zones qui ne sont pas des champs de pétrole. Un wildcatter remarquable pour son succès était le magnat du pétrole texan Glenn McCarthy. Le terme date du début de l'industrie pétrolière dans l'ouest de la Pennsylvanie. Par exemple, le Titusville Herald a noté en 1880: «La découverte du fluide dans l'État de New York était le signal pour l'exode général des chasseurs sauvages de toutes les parties du pays pétrolier ...» L'origine de l'industrie pétrolière provient de Wildcat Hollow Dans le parc d'état de Oil Creek situé près de Titusville, Pennsylvanie. Wildcat Hollow était l'un des nombreux champs productifs au début de l'ère du pétrole. Selon la tradition, un spéculateur qui a risqué sa chance en forçant dans cette vallée étroite a tiré sur un chat sauvage, l'avait rempli et l'a placé au sommet de son tour. Le chat monté a donné son nom au creux. Parce que la zone a été largement non testée et un peu loin de Oil Creek Flats, le terme Wildcatter a été inventé, décrivant une personne qui a risqué de forer dans une zone non prouvée. Cependant, le wildcat était l'argot américain pour toute entreprise commerciale risquée d'ici 1838, bien avant la montée de l'industrie pétrolière.
