Astronomie à rayons X
L'astronomie aux rayons X est une branche observatoire de l'astronomie qui traite de l'étude de l'observation et de la détection des rayons X à partir d'objets astronomiques. Le rayonnement X est absorbé par l'atmosphère terrestre, de sorte que les instruments pour détecter les rayons X doivent être portés à haute altitude par des ballons, des roquettes et des satellites. L'astronomie des rayons X est la science spatiale liée à un type de télescope spatial qui peut voir plus loin que les télescopes standard d'absorption de lumière, tels que les Observatoires Mauna Kea, par rayonnement X. L'émission de rayons X est attendue d'objets astronomiques qui contiennent des gaz extrêmement chauds à des températures d'environ un million de kelvin à des centaines de millions de kelvin. Bien que les rayons X aient été observés émanant du Soleil depuis les années 1940, la découverte en 1962 de la première source de rayons X cosmiques a été une surprise. Cette source s'appelle Scorpius X-1, la première source de rayons X trouvée dans la constellation Scorpius. L'émission de rayons X de Scorpius X-1 est 10 000 fois supérieure à son émission visuelle, alors que celle du Soleil est d'environ un million de fois moins. En outre, la production d'énergie dans les rayons X est 100 000 fois supérieure à l'émission totale du Soleil dans toutes les longueurs d'onde.
