Cristallographie aux rayons X
La cristallographie aux rayons X est un outil utilisé pour identifier la structure atomique et moléculaire d'un cristal, dans lequel les atomes cristallins provoquent un rayon X de rayons X incidents diffractés dans de nombreuses directions spécifiques. En mesurant les angles et les intensités de ces faisceaux diffractés, un cristallographe peut produire une image tridimensionnelle de la densité d'électrons dans le cristal. A partir de cette densité électronique, on peut déterminer les positions moyennes des atomes dans le cristal, ainsi que leurs liaisons chimiques, leur désordre et diverses autres informations. Étant donné que de nombreux matériaux peuvent former des cristaux tels que des sels, des métaux, des minéraux, des semi-conducteurs, ainsi que diverses molécules inorganiques, organiques et biologiques, la cristallographie aux rayons X a été fondamentale dans le développement de nombreux domaines scientifiques. Au cours de ses premières décennies d'utilisation, cette méthode a déterminé la taille des atomes, les longueurs et les types de liaisons chimiques et les différences à l'échelle atomique entre divers matériaux, en particulier les minéraux et les alliages. La méthode a également révélé la structure et la fonction de nombreuses molécules biologiques, y compris les vitamines, les médicaments, les protéines et les acides nucléiques tels que l'ADN.
