Xérophtalmie
La xérophtalmie est un état médical dans lequel l'oeil ne produit pas de larmes. Cela peut être dû à une carence en vitamine A et est parfois utilisé pour décrire ce manque, bien qu'il puisse y avoir d'autres causes. La xérophtalmie provoquée par une carence grave en vitamine A est décrite par la sécheresse pathologique de la conjonctive et de la cornée. La conjonctive devient sèche, épaisse et froissée. Si elle n'est pas traitée, elle peut conduire à une ulcération de la cornée et, en fin de compte, à la cécité à la suite de dommages causés par la cornée. La xérophtalmie est un terme qui implique généralement une sécheresse destructive de l'épithélium conjonctival en raison de la carence en vitamine A alimentaire - un état rare dans les pays développés, mais qui cause encore beaucoup de dégâts dans les pays en développement. D'autres formes d'œil sec sont associées au vieillissement, à une mauvaise fermeture du couvercle, à une cicatrisation de blessures antérieures ou à des maladies auto-immunes telles que la polyarthrite rhumatoïde et le syndrome de Sjögren, et tous peuvent provoquer une conjonctivite chronique. La thérapie par radioiodine peut également induire une xérophtalmie souvent transitoire, bien que chez certains patients atteints d'apparition tardive ou d'une xérophtalmie persistante ait été observée.
