Le Jahwist, ou Yahwist, souvent abrégé dans le discours exégétique, est l'une des sources du Pentateuque, avec le Deutéronomisme, la source Elohiste et Priestée. Il tire son nom du fait qu'il utilise de manière caractéristique le terme Yahweh pour Dieu dans le livre de la Genèse. Au cours de la majeure partie du 20ème siècle, la croyance dominante parmi les savants était que la Torah avait été composée en entrelacant quatre documents distincts et complets, dont le Yahwist était un, ce qui s'appelait l'hypothèse documentaire. Au dernier quart du 20ème siècle, le consensus sur l'hypothèse documentaire a été démantelé, et bien qu'il ait encore des supporters, il existe maintenant de nombreuses alternatives. Ces alternatives peuvent être largement réparties entre les modèles "fragmentaires" et "complémentaires". Les hypothèses fragmentaires, notées notamment dans le travail de Rolf Rendtorff et Erhard Blum, considèrent le Pentateuque comme une croissance par l'accélération progressive du matériel dans des blocs plus grands et plus grands avant d'être réunis, d'abord par un écrivain de Deuteronomie, puis par un écrivain sacerdotal qui A également ajouté son propre matériel.
