Gestalt a été initialement proposé avant la seconde guerre mondiale en Allemagne pour la théorie de la perception, une alternative à d'autres connu et accepté début du XXe siècle. En raison de ses différentes théories, l'approche pour décrire le phénomène de perception a continué et a été développée. Le terme Gestalt se réfère maintenant à l'école de thérapie, et la psychologie de la forme proposée par l'école de Berlin se réfère à la psychologie du personnage. La Gestalt est à la fois une forme de psychothérapie, une direction en psychologie et une philosophie spécifique de la vie. En tant que direction de la psychologie, la Gestalt vient de la psychanalyse, bien qu'elle soit en même temps à l'origine d'une contradiction assez nette. En tant que philosophie de la vie, on trouve aussi son origine dans la psychanalyse et, d'autre part, dans l'existentialisme, la phénoménologie et le bouddhisme zen. La Gestalt n'est ni un département philosophique complet, ni un département «scientifique» complet de la psychologie. C'est une limite de la psychologie, de la philosophie et de l'art. Cependant, de nombreux concepts développés par Gestalt sont entrés dans le dictionnaire de la psychologie contemporaine.

Gestalt pierwotnie stanowiła zaproponowaną przed II wojną światową w Niemczech teorię percepcji, alternatywną do innych znanych i akceptowanych na początku XX wieku. Ze względu na swoje odmienne od innych teorii podejście do opisu zjawiska percepcji doczekała się kontynuacji i została rozwinięta. Obecnie termin Gestalt odnosi się do szkoły terapii , zaś do teorii percepcji zaproponowanej przez szkołę berlińską odnosi się termin psychologia postaci. Gestalt to jednocześnie forma psychoterapii, kierunek w psychologii oraz swoista filozofia życia. Jako kierunek w psychologii, Gestalt wywodzi się z psychoanalizy, choć jednocześnie stoi z nią w dość ostrej sprzeczności. Jako filozofia życia, wywodzi się również z jednej strony z psychoanalizy, a z drugiej z egzystencjalizmu, fenomenologii oraz buddyzmu zen. Gestalt nie jest właściwie ani pełnym kierunkiem filozoficznym, ani pełnym "naukowym" działem psychologii. Jest czymś z pogranicza psychologii, filozofii i sztuki. Jednak wiele koncepcji wypracowanych przez Gestalt weszło do słownika współczesnej psychologii.
