Une jonction de la circulation - un carrefour de routes ferroviaires et routières, un aéroport international, un pipeline de Homos à Lattaquié traverse la ville. Centre des sciences et de la culture - université, école théologique musulmane, école de musique. Les traditions musulmanes et judaïques disent que pendant les errances d'Ur à Canaan, le patriarche biblique Abraham s'est reposé sur une colline fortifiée.

Siedziba władz prowincji Halab. Największe miasto Syrii - 1,4 mln mieszkańców, 1,7 mln mieszkańców, 2,0 mln mieszkańców. Jedno z najstarszych nieprzerwanie zamieszkanych miast Bliskiego Wschodu - od co najmniej 1800 p.n.e. Zamieszkane głównie przez Arabów, dość liczni są Turcy i Ormianie, oprócz nich mieszkają w Aleppo Grecy, Kurdowie i Żydzi. Ośrodek przemysłu włókienniczego i spożywczego, ośrodek tkactwa dywanów. Jedno z większych centrów handlowych Bliskiego Wschodu. Węzeł komunikacyjny - skrzyżowanie szlaków kolejowych i drogowych, międzynarodowy port lotniczy, przez miasto przebiega rurociąg z Homsu do Latakii. Ośrodek nauki i kultury - uniwersytet, muzułmańska szkoła teologiczna, szkoła muzyczna. Tradycja muzułmańska i judaistyczna podają, że podczas wędrówki z Ur do Kanaanu na fortecznym wzgórzu odpoczywał biblijny patriarcha Abraham.
