Moher - laine de chèvre angora. L'origine du nom est contestée. Par exemple, Wladyslaw Kopalinski donne une étymologie du flyjjar arabe. Le Collaborative International Dictionary of English suggère également l'origine de fr. moire - qui rappelle le marbre. Le lieu d'origine du mohair est donné au Tibet, mais des images de Babylone sont également connues, représentant les gens dans des vêtements d'une manière caractéristique, indiquant qu'ils peuvent avoir été faits de mohair. La production de Mohair était connue en Asie Mineure. Les premières chèvres d'Europe sont arrivées en Europe en 1554. Cependant, elles n'ont pas développé leurs chenils. Jako miejsce pochodzenia moheru podawany jest Tybet, ale znane są też wizerunki pochodzące z Babilonu, przedstawiające ludzi w ubraniach w sposób charakterystyczny zmechaconych, co wskazuje na to, że mogły być one wykonane z moheru. Produkcja moheru znana była w Azji Mniejszej. Do Europy pierwsze kozy angorskie dotarły w 1554. Nie udało się wtedy jednak rozwinąć ich hodowli. Z końcem XVIII w. próbowano sprowadzić kozy angorskie do Szwecji, Wenecji, Niemiec oraz Anglii, jednak bez sukcesu. W związku z trudnością ze zdobyciem surowca tkaniny moherowe były bardzo drogie. Jako przykład wskazujący na dużą ich wartość posłużyć może zapisek z Wiśnickiej księgi złoczyńców z XVII wieku, opisujący przypadki kradzieży moherowych sukni.
