La supernova - en terme d'astronomie pour plusieurs types d'explosions cosmiques qui donnent naissance au ciel de l'objet exceptionnellement lumineux, qui, après quelques semaines ou quelques mois, il devient presque invisible. Il y a deux voies possibles à une telle explosion: dans le noyau d'une étoile massive a cessé de se produire des réactions thermonucléaires et étoile de rayonnement dépressurisé commence à crouler sous son propre poids, ou naine blanche si chercher longue masse d'une étoile voisine jusqu'à ce qu'il dépasse la masse de Chandrasekhar, ce qui a entraîné l'explosion de thermonucléaires . Dans les deux cas, l'explosion de supernova suivante avec une grande force jette la plupart ou la totalité de la matière de l'étoile dans l'espace. Istnieją dwie możliwe drogi prowadzące do takiego wybuchu: w jądrze masywnej gwiazdy przestały zachodzić reakcje termojądrowe i pozbawiona ciśnienia promieniowania gwiazda zaczyna zapadać się pod własnym ciężarem, lub też biały karzeł tak długo pobierał masę z sąsiedniej gwiazdy, aż przekroczył masę Chandrasekhara, co spowodowało eksplozję termojądrową. W obydwu przypadkach, następująca eksplozja supernowej z ogromną siłą wyrzuca w przestrzeń większość lub całą materię gwiazdy. Utworzona w ten sposób mgławica jest bardzo nietrwała i ulega całkowitemu zniszczeniu już po okresie kilkudziesięciu tysięcy lat, znikając zupełnie bez śladu. Z tego powodu w Drodze Mlecznej znamy obecnie zaledwie 265 pozostałości po supernowych, choć szacunkowa liczba tego rodzaju wybuchów w ciągu ostatnich kilku miliardów lat jest rzędu wielu milionów.
