वर्णप्रत्यय संज्ञा पुं० [सं०]
छंदःशास्त्र या पिंगल मे वे क्रियाएँ जिनके
द्वारा यह जाना जाता है कि अमुक सख्या के वर्णवृत्तों के
कितने भेद हो सकते हैं और उनके स्वरूप क्या होंगे, इत्यादि ।
विशेष—जिस प्रकार मात्रिक छंदों में ९ प्रत्यय होते हैं, उसी
प्रकार वर्णवृत्तों में भी ९ प्रत्यय होते हैं—प्रस्तार, सुची,
पाताल, उद्दिष्ट, नष्ट, मेरु, खंडमेरु, पताका और मर्कटी ।
